What Makes an Effective Business Presentation?

First, what are you trying to do?  Think through your goals and objectives and plan your presentation for the time allotted.  For example:

PRESENTATION TIPS

  • Practice, Practice, Practice
  • Know your audience – talk to attendees – understand their expectations
  • PowerPoint slides – clean, simple,
  • Do not apologize – nervous, cluttered slide, etc.
  • Rule of Three – 3 reasons, 3 points, etc.
  • Don’t read the slides or the script
  • Memorize the first 30 seconds – opening
  • Use research, studies to support your point
  • Proof – grammar, spelling, etc.
  • Murphy’s Law – prepare a contingency plan
  • Stay on time
  • Engage, involve the audience
  • Dress appropriately
  • Do not underestimate the time to prepare
  • Content is more important than pretty slides
  • Check the room layout
  • Check out the equipment
  • Do not procrastinate
  • Anticipate questions – prepare responses
  • Teamwork – rehearse thoroughly
  • Start and end on time
  • Use technology to practice – PowerPoint tools, iPhone voice recorder, video, etc.
